Herdback

When a homeowner calls about a leaking water heater and nobody picks up, they usually call the next shop. Plenty of tools promise to fix that. They work in very different ways: some answer the call, some text the caller back, some only tell you it happened. This comparison groups them by approach and lists the prices each vendor publishes, as checked on the date above. Where a vendor does not publish prices, we say so instead of guessing.

Start with the question that matters

Before buying anything, measure the problem. How many new-customer calls did you miss last month, and how long did each wait for a callback? If almost every missed caller is called back within minutes, a new tool will not change much. If many wait hours, the right tool depends on why: nobody available during the day, no coverage after hours, or no process to follow up. Our free audit answers that from your own call log.

How to choose

  • Calls missed during busy hours, with staff available later: a fast follow-up process may be enough. Track time to callback and set a target, such as every missed new caller called back within 15 minutes.
  • Calls missed after hours: an answering service or AI receptionist that can book, or at least capture the job details, is the usual fix.
  • Already on Jobber or Housecall Pro: compare their add-ons first; they cost less to try and book directly into your schedule.
  • Automated texts to homeowners: ask the vendor how consent and carrier registration are handled. Automated texts in the US are regulated, and the vendor's answer tells you how seriously they take it.

Whatever you pick, measure before and after with the same method. A tool that cannot show fewer unreturned new callers a month after you switch it on is not paying for itself.
